Semisi Ma’u
a native of the Tonga Islands (South Pacific) grew up playing music
with his older brothers, who were popular club musicians.
Now
Semisi is in Southern California playing the electric guitar and is
the leader of his own band, “Semisi & FulaBula”. Semisi and the band
perform original songs with an original approach to dance music.
When
Semisi mixes rhythms of the South Pacific with any style of |

music
he takes a liking to, he calls it “Bula”. The San Diego based
musician borrows a greeting word “Bula” from Fiji, and he feels that
combining traditional elements of his native music gives his
performances a new vitality and depth. The songs that have undergone
“Bula” transformation have been as diverse as folk songs, classical,
Latin, jazz, rock and reggae. The idea is open to any style and the
experimental trial and error involved in superimposing the styles is
half the fun! |
